I contemplated putting a picture of myself using some big fancy camera, in some faraway location, the sun to my back, my hair windswept. I’d maybe even throw on some low contrast vintage filter, a lens flare, and just to get crazy, a vignette. DP's are an interesting breed, we try and make ourselves look as cool as possible, because you clearly have to be cool and mysterious to make fantastic images. I’ll admit I still try to be like that, my wife and daughters constantly remind me that I’m not there yet.
The picture above was taken on a music video shoot, in-between takes, in below freezing weather, and we were all working for free. The reason I’ve chosen it as my defining picture in an “about” section that 10 people will read is simple, when I’m your Director of Photography this is what you’ll get. I’m a goof, I’m energetic, I'm easy to work with and I truly believe that I’m the funniest person in the fucking world (no proof). I'll do my best with what I'm given, whether I’m a one-man band or I’m running a full crew, I have tons of experience with both. I strive to shoot what makes sense to the story and to the edit, all while creating the prettiest picture possible. I’ve worked with all the cameras and lenses out there and in another life I’d be a gaffer. If you’re looking for a super technical guy that meticulously plans everything out, then probably keep looking, but if you need a DP that’s down to hang out the side of a minivan with a gimbal rig or ruin his new boots for a shot, then holy shit look no further.
I'm currently the Director of Photography at COLOR, that’s where I do my Corporate and Commercial work. If you’re looking for someone to shoot your next Short, Feature or Music Video, or need an excuse to grab a beer on a Tuesday, then please feel free to contact me. Cheers.
